Jack, an asthmatic twelve year old, and his mother move into and old farmhouse in the English countryside, sounds normal enough, right? Wrong, Jack later finds out that he can communicate with ghosts who live in the house, he unknowingly establishes a relationship with the “Ghost Mother” a depressed spirit who becomes extremely attached to Jack. There are also four other ghosts trapped in the farmhouse by the “Ghost Mother,” she steals their energy to stay alive in the real world. Before Jack could do anything to help the defenseless ghosts escape, the “Ghost Mother” takes control of Jack’s real mother’s body. Jack wants to fight back but, with asthma, he risks having an attack with too much physical exertion. It will take Jack everything he’s got to get the “Ghost Mother” to exit his real mother’s body, and to save the four ghost children from living eternity in the farmhouse. An interesting part in the book is when, Jack comes face to face with one of the younger ghosts. She leads him to the "Nightmare Passage," the "Nightmare Passage," is a sort of purgatory where ghosts are held, and viciously condemned. This fantasy book will keep readers who enjoy suspense and a good ghost story wobbling on the edge of their chair wanting more. I very much enjoyed reading this book.
