This dramatic, realistic fiction, crime novel takes place in Harlem, New York, mostly in city lockup, and the drugstore. Steve Harmon, who is only sixteen, is on trial for felony murder. He is claimed to be the lookout for this robbery that turned bad, however he says that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. When Steve has to spend time in the city lockup awaiting trial, the seriousness of the situation hits him, that he could be locked up for felony murder which is a sentence of 25 to life. There is no actual evidence linking Steve to the crime besides a personal testimony by one of the other gang members also involved in the crime. However some of Steve's "buddies" aren't as lucky as he is. They are linked to the crime by a pack of stolen cigarettes that were later sold to a local dealer of stolen goods. The story continues with Steve writing in his journal about his experiences at the lockup and the trial. The part I found most exciting was the verdict, when the judge pronounced Steve not-guilty, all charges were dropped, and Steve got a second chance to live his life a free man. But, his close friend, James, is not so lucky and is found guilty of murder along with the other gang members. In my opinion this book would best suite young adults who prefer crime based books.
