This fictional young adult novel is the funniest sad story you will read. It's all about a fourteen year old boy named Arnold Spirt or Junior as all the kids on his Spokane Indian Reservation call him. Well, just to start it off Arnold is a pretty messed up kid, he has a stutter, a lisp, he has too much fluid in his brain, and he is prone to seizures. This just yells BULLY VICTIM doesn't it, well he has his best friend Rowdy to back him up. Rowdy is the biggest, strongest, kid on the rez and he will beat up anyone who makes fun of Arnold. They were best friends ever sense they were born, but when Arnold gets some good advice from a teacher he pelted in the face with a math book he leaves the rez betraying all the people who live on the rez with him, and leaving his best friend behind. Arnold decides to go to a preppy school, Reardan, to meet all his expectations in life. Now Arnold stands out a lot in a normal crowd, but Reardan is an all white school and Arnold being Indian makes him stand out even more. At first Arnold thinks he is going to get a woopin everyday without Rowdy around so he stays on his toes expecting anything to happen. One day when Roger a classmate started to make fun of Arnold's culture he stood up for himself and socked Roger in the face. This, for some strange reason made Roger respect Arnold, and other kids started to respect him too. Arnold wasn't too great at making new friends, but Gordy, the class genius, stood up for Arnold they became pretty good friends. Lets not forget about Penelope, Penelope is Arnold's crush, but she has a couple problems of her own. She is bulimic, which means she has an eating disorder, but other than that she is amazing. As if Arnold's life isn't messed up enough he has to deal with the death of his sister, grandmother, and his dad's best friend, and to make matters worse all these deaths occurred months apart. My favorite part of the book is when Arnold and Rowdy become best friends again, they spend all night playing basketball to see who will win, but they don't keep score. I think that anyone with a sense of humor will enjoy this book because it is filled with great jokes and its just one of those books you'll laugh your way through.

I love this book and think you did a great job of giving a book talk about it.
