Amber House was a home for many families generations back. When her "crazy" grandmother passed away, Sarah Parsons and her family inherited Amber House, one of the wealthiest and grandest estates in Maryland. The house even has a name. Sarah's icy, manipulative mother, Anne, wants nothing to do with the mansion and plans to leave right after the mansion is sold. Sarah and her little brother, Sam, have never been to Amber House and they soon find out that Amber House holds secrets, legends, betrayals, and crimes. Sarah always thought that she was a typical teenage girl, but she soon finds out that she is not so normal. While looking for the lost diamonds with the help of her new friend, Jackson, she learns that she can see visions , or "echoes" of the mansion's history up to three centuries ago when the house was built just by touching an item from that time period. Anything Sarah touches can lead to memories of pleasure or cruelty. The past is trapped in the house forever. Sarah starts seeing her artistic mother when she was a little girl tied in with a tragic accident that happened to one of her relatives. Could this be the reason of her mother's unhappiness? What might happen when she sees a problem rising between one of her family members and has been told from a fortune teller that the solution is most likely DEATH. Plus, puzzling Jackson is hiding a secret from Sarah, something that might make her hate him forever. Sarah has to find a way to change "the web of the past" if it were possible. My favorite part of the story was when the fortune teller was giving Sarah her fortune at the open house and everything was true. I'm a very superstitious person so it was very shocking when the fortune teller's cards were pointing towards death. This book had so many visual descriptions that really scared me. This book is fantasy, horror, and romance with a hint of drama. I would recommend this to teenagers who love horror and spooky stories, but also history as well. This is the first book in the Amber House Trilogy.
