Unexpectedly, Thomas awakens in a dark, metal box. Thomas believes he is in an elevator heading up; but he is not sure. His memory is completely gone. The only thing he knows is that his first name is Thomas. Once the elevator comes to a halt, the doors open. Thomas steps out and notices dozens of boys looking at him with curiosity. He is soon welcomed by the boys who call themselves Gladers and learns he is now in a place called the Glade which is an enclosed area surrounded by giant stone walls. Every morning, the stone doors open to reveal a vast maze. Every night, the doors close; so nobody wants to be caught outside the walls after dusk. Thomas also learns he is not alone. All of the boys have amnesia as well and only remember their first names. Every month, a boy will arrive from the same elevator Thomas arrived from. An interesting part from the book is when a girl is sent up the elevator. Her name is Teresa. The Gladers were expecting Thomas, but not her. Teresa is the first girl ever to enter the Glade; but the message she delivers is the biggest surprise saying, “She’s the last one. Ever.” Now the boys must find a solution to the maze in order to free themselves from the Glade. The genre of this book is science fiction. Anyone who likes books that involve action and take place in a dystopian future would enjoy The Maze Runner. I really enjoyed reading this book.
