During the time of Queen Victoria’s reign, sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray has just left her home in New York to find her brother, Nathaniel in England after her aunt passes away. Right as she arrives in England, Tessa is kidnapped by two women called the Dark Sisters who are a part of a secret organization named The Pandemonium Club. The Dark Sisters tell Tessa that she has the rare talent to transform into any person living or deceased. For six weeks, she is taught how to use her ability and learns that once she “changes” she can enter the person’s mind she transforms into. The Dark Sisters then announce that Tessa must marry the leader of The Pandemonium Club, the Magister. Before the wedding, Tessa is rescued by Will, a Shadowhunter, or warrior who is devoted to eliminating all demons from the world. She is taken to the London Institute where many Shadowhunters seem to live. There, Tessa learns that supernatural creatures like vampires, werewolves, and warlocks who are called Downworlders really do exist and she is actually one of them. Even with all of this happening, Tessa insists on finding her older brother with help from the Shadowhunters. Tessa also becomes interested in two best friends Will and Jem who are complete opposites. Will is an arrogant, charming Shadowhunter who distances himself from everyone while Jem is a warrior who is kind and open to anyone. Can Tessa choose between finding her brother and helping the Shadowhunters save the world? An interesting part from the book is when Tessa has to transform herself into a vampire named Camille and attend a vampire party hoping her brother will be there. Nathaniel is there but not in the way she expects. She learns that the vampires plan to drink his blood. Clockwork Angel is the prequel to the Mortal Instruments series and its genre is fantasy. Anyone who likes historical fiction and fantasy, along with books about supernatural creatures would love this book, but I think everyone should read Clockwork Angel. I highly recommend this book.
