Monster By Walter Dean Myers
Genre: Nonfiction
This book takes place in New York, Harlem in modern times, and mainly the city lock up. The main character of this book is Steve Harmon who is accused of murder. His lawyer is Kathy O'Brien. While steve is locked up he rights several journal entries. He wrote lots in his journal. Mainly in his journal he wrote about past experiences from his past and talks about his school years. In oen of his entries he right about his 3rd grade math teachers how she was the nicest and most kind person he saw, or at least one of them.
Kathy O'Brien is working had on Steves case and almsot has it in the middle of the book. She talks to steve often about what he did and tries to get soe other information from him. She talks to steve about many things, small things because she knows every little detail counts.
James King, he was one of the people that got Steve Harmon into trouble, he encourages steve to join his gang/crew and he told steve they were going to rob a drug store. James king shot an older man to death.
One of the most exiting / shocking parts of the book is when Steve is finally is realized to his parents and he goes home. one day he was called out and said he was free to go. Kathy had done it he thought. This part to me was shocking because I did not think that he would be getting out so sudden, there were not many clues of suspecting his freedom before he was released.
I think that people that want a nice quick 304 page book. I would recommend this to people over the age of 12 or in 7th grade to read this book if some of them are interested about what it would be like to arrested for being accused of something, having only seeing what he saw out his window while he is locked up, and not being able to spend as much time with your family. Maybe even some people that like to read nonfiction books because this very well could happen.
How did the book "Monster" get its name? At the beginning of the book Steve was called a Monster by by of the prosecutors just after getting arrested.
