Sixteen year old Maya Delaney has always felt different from everybody else. She was adopted as a little girl and was relocated in a small town that you can't even find on the map. All she knows is that she has a paw-print birthmark at the edge of her hip, has a Navajo background, and is considered the fastest climber and runner in town. However, this town is no ordinary town. It is part of a medical research facility and is extremely successful in just about everything. From swimming to running this small island dominates. Ever since Maya's best friend, Serena, died in an accidental drowning everything has fallen apart. How does the captain of the swim team drown suddenly in a small peaceful lake? The researchers say a side effect from medicine, but that could just be a cover for a dark secret. After her death, the town has been in a frenzy with recent cougar attacks, a new nosy reporter, and mysterious new neighbors, Rafe and his secretly brain damaged sister. Maya and her best guy friend Daniel team up to uncover more on the town and her friends' gifted, but extraordinary talents. Who can she trust? She learns a new vocabulary word, “skin-walker", that will change her life forever. This book has so many interesting parts, but my absolute favorite is when Maya and Daniel are trying to find Annie, Rafe's sister, when a forest fire starts "accidentally" and they are trying to escape. It made me feel like I was actually there and what I would do in that situation. I would categorize this book as an urban fantasy book, but it can be put into so many more genres such as mystery, horror, adventure, or teen romance. I would recommend this to anyone who loves an exciting supernatural story of adventure, mystery, friendship, and love. This is the first book in the Darkness Rising Trilogy.
